The fifth book of the Abhidhamma-piṭaka is the only canonical text attributed to an author and given a composition date by the tradition. It consists of a discussion of heretical statements that are refuted in favour of orthodox Theravādin beliefs.

Translation of the Kathāvatthu

The fifth book of the Abhidhamma-piṭaka and traditionally attributed to Moggaliputta Tissa (3rd century BCE). It consists of a  collection of debates concerning over 200 disputed points of Buddhist doctrine: the positions of other Buddhist schools are refuted by the advocate of the Theravādin position.
